Cubitus Varus

Post Feature Image

Normally the elbow is deviated outside by 10 degree of the elbow (known as carrying angle) . In a malunited Supracondylar Humerus fracture this normal carrying angle lost and there is inward deviation of forearm- known as cubitus varus deformity. It was previously thought to be only cosmetic deformity, but now it has been proved that it is both cosmetic and functional deformity and needs to be corrected.

Physiological elbow bend- there is a gradual increase in carrying angle from age of 5 years to 15 years then there is a sudden drop of 2-3 degrees at 18 years of age. So a inward bend in all possibility is not normal and needs evaluation and may not correct by itself.

Corrective Osteotomy is the recommended surgery for Cubitus Varus
