Congenital Muscular Torticollis

This is a condition where the neck is tilted on a side since birth. The cause is the tight neck muscle called ‘sternocleidomastoid’. If diagnosed shortly after birth, this deformity can be corrected easily by positioning of the neck. Conservative treatments like ‘differential neck collar’ and ‘stretching of the neck muscle’ also has been used in younger children. After age of 5 years, surgical treatment in the form of ‘release of the sternocleidomastoid’ is performed.

Facial asymmetry is a non-correctable complication if correction of this deformity is delayed. Sometimes patient complaints of double vision (macular fixity) after correction, if the correction is delayed.
